For the grown-up
Each lesson takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Big idea
California has symbols of its own, within the United States.
Words
- California our state
- poppy California’s state flower
- quail California’s state bird
- redwood state tree including two kinds
Talk together
- Which picture is the bird?
- Where are the two bears?
- What can you tell about a state and a national symbol?
Get ready
- Approved sample images and s4-symbols cut sheet with face-down check strip.
Safety
- Only a grown-up uses scissors or cuts cardboard. Keep small pieces out of mouths; use large cards.
- A grown-up chooses a safe accessible route and stays close; hold hands near streets. Stay away from traffic, wildlife, unknown plants and standing water; use photos indoors if needed.
How to help
Let your child listen, look and try before you explain. Point to the next picture if needed. Accept drawing, pointing or a voice response; writing is optional. Save the child’s own work with a date.
