For the grown-up
Each lesson takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Big idea
We can use a test to compare two shade designs.
Words
- compare consider both
- gap open space
- steady not tipping
- improve make work better
Talk together
- Which parts helped each design?
- What was hard about each?
- What would you change next?
Get ready
- Two student-built shades, equal ice cubes, matching plates, timer and a separate sunny control plate.
Safety
- A grown-up stays close. Never look at the Sun; use hats, sunscreen and shade breaks. The adult checks surfaces first; do not touch anything hot.
- A grown-up handles ice with a spoon or cloth; avoid prolonged skin contact. Test ice is not for eating; wipe meltwater.
- A grown-up stays within reach of water. Use small amounts in shallow unbreakable trays, away from power; wipe spills and wash hands. Do not drink test water.
- Only a grown-up uses scissors or cuts cardboard. Keep small pieces out of mouths; use large cards.
How to help
Let your child listen, look and try before you explain. Point to the next picture if needed. Accept drawing, pointing or a voice response; writing is optional. Save the child’s own work with a date.
