Words
- local near where we live
- prepare get ready
- respond act when needed
- shelter safer place
Talk together
- What bad weather happens near us?
- Who gets the warning?
- Where do we go and what do we do?
Get ready
- Adult checks local NWS and emergency-management advice first; family indoor meeting spot and picture supplies.
Safety
- A grown-up chooses a safe accessible route and stays close; hold hands near streets. Stay away from traffic, wildlife, unknown plants and standing water; use photos indoors if needed.
- A grown-up stays close. Never look at the Sun; use hats, sunscreen and shade breaks. The adult checks surfaces first; do not touch anything hot.
- A grown-up stays within reach of water. Use small amounts in shallow unbreakable trays, away from power; wipe spills and wash hands. Do not drink test water.
How to help
Let your child listen, look and try before you explain. Point to the next picture if needed. Accept drawing, pointing or a voice response; writing is optional. Save the child’s own work with a date.
