For the grown-up
Each lesson takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Big idea
Strong weather calls for an adult’s safety plan.
Words
- storm rough weather
- heat very warm conditions
- flood water covering normally dry land
- warning notice of danger
Talk together
- What question would you ask about this hazard?
- Who checks warnings in our home?
- Which safe place would we use?
Get ready
- Calm hazard drawings, adult-screened local warning example and indoor safe-place cards; no disaster footage.
Safety
- A grown-up stays close. Never look at the Sun; use hats, sunscreen and shade breaks. The adult checks surfaces first; do not touch anything hot.
- A grown-up stays within reach of water. Use small amounts in shallow unbreakable trays, away from power; wipe spills and wash hands. Do not drink test water.
- A grown-up chooses a safe accessible route and stays close; hold hands near streets. Stay away from traffic, wildlife, unknown plants and standing water; use photos indoors if needed.
How to help
Let your child listen, look and try before you explain. Point to the next picture if needed. Accept drawing, pointing or a voice response; writing is optional. Save the child’s own work with a date.
