Each lesson takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Big idea
A map shows real places from above, and the small pictures in the key stand for those places.
Words
- map a picture of a place, seen from above
- symbol a small picture that stands for a real thing
- key the box that tells what each symbol means
- path the way you go from one place to another
- neighborhood the homes, streets and places near where you live
Talk together
- If you were a bird above our street, what would you see?
- Which picture stands for the library? How do you know?
- What is near our home? What is far away?
- How could we get from home to the park?
Get ready
- Crayons or colored pencils
- A short walk or drive around your block first, or photos of nearby places
Safety
- A grown-up chooses a safe accessible route and stays close; hold hands near streets. Stay away from traffic, wildlife, unknown plants and standing water; use photos indoors if needed.
