For the grown-up
Each lesson takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Big idea
A map key tells what each small symbol means.
Words
- symbol small picture for a place
- key guide to symbols
- route path from place to place
- traffic movement on roads
Talk together
- How can the key tell you what this means?
- Which road symbol tells a driver to stop?
- How is this different from a picture of the whole place?
Get ready
- Large model map, S3-map-sign cards, blank key and Week 13 traffic evidence.
Safety
- A grown-up chooses a safe accessible route and stays close; hold hands near streets. Stay away from traffic, wildlife, unknown plants and standing water; use photos indoors if needed.
- Only a grown-up uses scissors or cuts cardboard. Keep small pieces out of mouths; use large cards.

How to help
Let your child listen, look and try before you explain. Point to the next picture if needed. Accept drawing, pointing or a voice response; writing is optional. Save the child’s own work with a date.
